IV International Mammoth Conference
The Past and Present of Woolly Mammoth. Modern trends in the studies of extinct
and living proboscideans.
Yakutsk, June 17-24th, 2007
The tradition of international scientific conferences on mammoth started in
1995 under the initiative of the Mammoth Committee of Russia at the Zoological
Institute of the Russian Academy of Science. The First International Mammoth
Conference took place in 1995 in St.-Petersburg (Russia), the Second - in 1999
in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), the Third - in 2003 in Whitehorse and
Dawson City (Canada). Due to the kind invitation of the Government of Sakha
(Yakutia) Republic, the next Mammoth Conference will be organized in Yakutia,
which is one of the richest areas on the Earth for mammoth fossils.
The IV International Mammoth Conference will take place in Yakutia from June
17th till June 24th, 2007, on the base of the Mammoth Museum of the Institute
of Applied Ecology of the North, Sakha (Yakutia) Republic Academy of Sciences.
The Conference will be opened on June 17th, 2007 in Yakutsk, in the Assembly
Hall of the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic Academy of Sciences. From June 18th till
June 22nd, the Conference will proceed on board of the cruise ship, traveling
down the Lena and up the Aldan Rivers to the famous outcrop Mamontova Gora
(Mammoth Mountain) in the lower course of the Aldan River. The sessions of
the Conference and working meetings will be held on board during this cruise;
also, some Late Cenozoic localities will be visited on the way. At Mamontova
Gora, the field excursion will be held, with work on the locality and discussions.
On June 23rd-24th, a charter flight is planned to take the participants of
the Conference to the town of Khatanga to visit the Museum in Permafrost.
The work of the IV International Mammoth Conference (IV IMC) will be organized
under the following sections:
1. Evolution, phylogeny and systematics of the representatives of genus Mammuthus
and closely related groups of the family Elephantidae.
2. Individual development and ontogenetic features of woolly mammoth; morphological
adaptations in mammoths and other elephants.
3. The Mammoth Fauna, its history and the problems of extinction.
4. Paleoecological studies of localities of mammoth and other animals of Mammoth
Fauna (palynology, paleopedology, etc.). Global climate changes in the Holarctic
during the Pleistocene.
5. Modern methods of study of mammoths and other members of Mammoth Fauna:
ancient DNA, microflora, etc.
6. Evolution, phylogeny, systematics and zoogeography of other representatives
of the Elephantidae family (fossil and modern).
7. Expeditions, excavations, taphonomy, the history of mammoth research.
8. Early Man as a contemporary of mammoth. Aspects of their coexistence and
interaction, role of mammoth and Mammoth Fauna in the process of human colonization
of Northern Holarctic during the second part of Pleistocene.
9. Mammoth ivory trade, souvenir products from mammoth ivory and other paleontological
materials.
The reports at the Conference are planned in the form of oral presentations (with slides, power-point, etc.) and posters.
