Professor Dale Guthrie (Fairbanks, Alaska) is author of the much acclaimed monograph on Ice Age art, The Nature of Paleolithic Art (Chicago University Press 2006). In this magnificent volume he develops a (controversial) “natural history” explanation of the first art produced by our species, between 35,000 and 10,000 years ago, and a strong critique of “symbolic” interpretations of this fascinating phenomenon.
